Moschino start 2018 with a bang as they present their CNY collection
The dog days are just beginning with Moschino's Chinese New Year capsule
2018 sees us welcome in the Year of the Dog, and while the New Year may bring you a renewed sense of positivity, prosperity and new opportunities, please put all of that to one side, as more importantly, the Year of the Dog brings us a brand new Moschino collection.
Previously confined to the annals of time, Jeremy Scott has dived deep into the archives to retrieve Pudgy, best known as Betty Boop’s canine companion, who was last seen on the small screen way back in 1939. A lot has changed since then, man has been to the moon, the Berlin wall has risen and fallen, we invented the internet. I mean, there’s still war and widespread economic disparity, but at least we’ve all got iPhones now.
Speaking of iPhones, Pudgy, a delightfully chipper black and white puppy, can be seen scampering across the back of them in this limited edition CNY release. In fact, Pudgy has been well and truly let off the leash to become the face of this capsule.
Comprising of six pieces, ranging from keyrings to scarves to sweaters, Moschino have really pushed the boat out with this collection, with an eclectic selection of designs and materials.
Take the nylon backpack, a classic piece of design presented in irresistible sun-drenched red hues, with Pudgy playfully pawing at the chunky zip that lies above the middle pocket. The knitted sweater sees Pudgy showcase his versatility in a design that sees him don a village people-esque leather hat, typical of the genre blurring irreverence that Moschino have become renowned for since Jeremy Scott became creative director in 2011.
The Year of the Dog, according to Millennia old ancient Chinese tradition (and also chinesezodiacexplained.com) 2018 specifically marks the year of the Earth dog. The main traits of the Earth dog are their calmness, serious demeanour and a responsible attitude towards work. All hallmark traits of a Moschino capsule.
As you might imagine, red features heavily in this collection. Symbolising good fortune and joy, red is ubiquitous during Chinese New Year, and it’s customary for senior family members to gift children and young adults with red envelopes flush with cash, which sounds brilliant. This is a quintessentially Moschino collection, playful and cartoonish, loaded with subversive cultural references and featuring a really interesting and diverse selection of high quality products, which are sure to be sought after. The collection is completed with an iPhone case, a scarf, a keyring and a T-shirt.
Chinese New Year falls on Friday 16th February, so be sure to stock up on fireworks and luxury Italian fashion goods, last year I forgot, and spent almost the entirety of the year of the Rooster living it down. You can find all six pieces from Moschino’s Chinese New Year capsule here and in our Bristol store. Here’s to a prosperous 2018, wear lots of red, drink plenty of water and be the best Earth dog you can be.
